Damaskos Byzantine 18K Gold Bracelet with Granulation

This bracelet is built around two of the oldest decorative techniques in Greek goldsmithing: granulation and twisted wire. Together they reconstruct the visual language of Archaic-period jewelry — precise, geometric, and entirely dependent on the maker’s hand. The martillé finish across the gold surface adds depth without gloss, giving the piece a tactile quality that photographs cannot fully capture.

The bracelet is crafted in 18K gold and weighs 15 grams — substantial enough to register on the wrist without excess. Martillé is a hand-hammering technique applied directly to the gold surface, producing the fine, peened texture visible across the body of the piece. Granulation involves fusing tiny spheres of gold onto the surface without solder — a process requiring precise heat control and practiced restraint. Twisted wire is drawn and coiled by hand, then set along the bracelet’s edges as a secondary decorative register. All three techniques are executed in the Damaskos workshop in Athens.

Damaskos has worked in this tradition for decades, producing pieces rooted in documented archaeological forms rather than stylized interpretations.
