Damaskos Byzantine 18K Gold Cross with Rubies & Diamonds – Granulation
An 18K gold Byzantine cross finished with black platinum and a hand-hammered martillé surface that gives the gold a distinctly velvety texture. Set with rhodolite rubies and 1.80mm diamonds totaling 0.44ct. Each cross is worked entirely by hand in the Damaskos atelier in Athens.
About The Product
This Byzantine cross is built around two defining techniques rarely combined in a single piece: a black platinum ground and a hand-hammered martillé finish that transforms the gold surface into something closer to fabric than metal. The result is a cross that reads differently in every light — matte, tactile, and architecturally dense.
The martillé technique involves striking the gold repeatedly with a specialized hammer to create a uniform velvety texture across the surface. Black platinum is then applied selectively to deepen contrast and define the relief. Rhodolite rubies and 1.80mm round diamonds — totaling 0.44 carats — are set into this layered surface by hand. The cross is cast and finished in 18K gold and weighs 8.5 grams, giving it a presence on the chest that lighter pieces do not achieve. Creating this cross requires a level of sequential hand-work that makes each piece unique in its final texture.
Damaskos is one of Athens’ most respected jewelry ateliers, working within the tradition of Byzantine and Archaic Greek goldsmithing for decades. This cross is suited to both daily wear and ceremonial occasions — substantial enough to be a statement, and crafted to the standard that makes it a piece passed down rather than replaced.
