Damaskos Byzantine Shield 18K Gold Cuff with Rhodolite
A rigid 18K gold cuff finished in a hand-hammered martillé surface that gives the gold a velvety, light-diffusing texture. The central shield motif is framed by granulation and twisted rope-wire — techniques drawn directly from ancient Greek goldsmithing. Set with a 4mm rhodolite and six round diamonds.
About The Product
The Byzantine Shield Cuff is a rigid 18K gold bracelet built around a central shield-form medallion — a motif rooted in Byzantine decorative tradition. What separates it from other pieces in the Damaskos collection is the combination of its architectural silhouette and the pronounced tactile finish across the entire surface.
The cuff is worked by hand in the Damaskos atelier using three distinct techniques. The martillé finish — achieved by striking the gold repeatedly with a specialized hammer — creates a faceted, velvety surface that absorbs and scatters light rather than reflecting it flatly. The shield’s perimeter is traced with granulation, the ancient process of fusing tiny gold spheres onto a surface without solder, and a twisted rope-wire border that recalls the decorative language of Hellenistic goldwork. The piece weighs 15 grams of 18K gold and is set with a single round rhodolite at 4mm and six diamonds at 1.40mm each. The setting was formerly described with black platinum detailing on the mounting.
Damaskos is one of the few remaining Greek ateliers where these pre-industrial techniques are still practiced as primary craft, not decorative reference. The cuff is substantial enough to wear as a standalone statement piece and is designed to pair naturally with rings, earrings, or a necklace from the same collection. Also available in all gold without the black platinum finish — contact Brilliant Athens for details.
