Damaskos Byzantine 18K Gold Constantinato Cross Pendant – Granulation
A Constantinato cross in 18K gold, decorated with the inscription “ICXC NIKA” and finished with granulation and a sandblasted matte surface. Each detail is worked by hand in the Damaskos atelier in Athens. Traditionally given to infants as a protective charm, it carries both devotional and cultural meaning.
About The Product
The Constantinato is one of the most recognized forms in Byzantine devotional jewelry — a cross pendant inscribed with “ICXC NIKA,” a Greek abbreviation meaning “Jesus Christ conquers.” This piece in 18K gold is finished with granulation along its surface and a sandblasted matte treatment that gives the gold a quiet, non-reflective warmth. It is distinct from polished or hammered pieces in the Damaskos collection in both texture and cultural register.
The granulation technique — in which tiny spheres of gold are fused to a metal surface without solder — traces directly to ancient Greek and Byzantine goldsmithing. The sandblasted finish is applied after forming, creating an even matte texture across the surface. The pendant weighs approximately 2.4 grams and is cast and finished in 18K gold. No gemstones are set in this version.
Damaskos is an Athens-based atelier with decades of practice in archaeological and Byzantine-revival goldsmithing. Their work is produced entirely by hand using documented historical techniques. The Constantinato has long been given as a gift to newborns in Greece, but it is equally worn by adults as a connection to Orthodox Christian tradition and Greek cultural heritage — suited to daily wear on a fine chain or as a considered gift for a meaningful occasion.
