Damaskos Byzantine 18K Gold Constantinato Cross with Ruby – Double 2,5 g
A double-sided 18K gold cross bearing the inscription ‘ICXC NIKA’ and a natural ruby on one face, the Virgin Mary with Christ on the reverse. The Constantinato is a traditional Greek protective cross, handcrafted in Athens by Damaskos. Set with a 1.80mm natural ruby.
About The Product
The Constantinato is one of the oldest forms of the Byzantine cross in Greek tradition. This double-sided pendant carries the inscription ‘ICXC NIKA’ — meaning ‘Jesus Christ conquers’ — alongside a natural ruby on one face, and a relief of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child on the reverse. It is not a decorative cross. It is a devotional object with a specific cultural function.
Handcrafted in 18K gold at the Damaskos atelier in Athens, the pendant weighs approximately 2.5 grams. The double-sided construction requires precise hand-finishing on both faces, with the lettering and figural relief worked separately before assembly. The natural ruby measures 1.80mm and is set flush to keep the profile clean. Gold purity is 18K throughout.
Damaskos has produced ecclesiastical and devotional jewelry in Athens for decades, working within the visual language of the Byzantine church without reproducing it as pastiche. The Constantinato is traditionally given to infants as a protective charm, but it carries equal weight as an adult piece — worn daily, passed between generations, or given at a baptism or confirmation. Also available in 14K gold; contact Brilliant Athens for details.
