Damaskos Constantinato 18K Gold Cross with Turquoise

The Constantinato is a specific form of Byzantine cross with a defined cultural function — traditionally given to infants as a protective charm, it carries the Greek inscription ICXC NIKA on one side and an image of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child on the other. This double-sided design means the pendant reads differently depending on how it rests, offering two complete compositions within a single piece.

The cross is worked in 18K gold and finished with a sandblasted surface that produces an even matte texture across the face of the piece. Sandblasting is a controlled abrasion technique applied after forming, used here in place of a polished finish to reduce reflectivity and give the gold a more grounded, architectural quality. A round turquoise stone is set on the ICXC NIKA face, its natural blue-green tone contrasting with the warm matte gold. The piece weighs approximately 1.8 grams. All work is carried out by hand in the Damaskos workshop in Athens.
