Damaskos Byzantine 18K Gold Cross with Diamonds – Granulation
An 18K gold cross finished in a hand-hammered martillé technique that gives the surface a soft, velvety texture. Set with five diamonds totaling 0.10 ct. Made entirely by hand in the Damaskos atelier using an archaic Byzantine design.
About The Product
This cross pendant is built around the martillé finish — a hand-hammering technique that breaks the gold surface into thousands of fine facets, creating a matte, velvety texture distinct from polished or satin-finished gold. The archaic Byzantine form is spare and deliberate, letting the surface work carry the visual weight rather than ornamental excess.
The cross is crafted in 18K gold and set with five diamonds totaling 0.10 carats. The martillé finish is applied entirely by hand, a process requiring sustained precision — each strike of the tool is unrepeatable, which means no two pieces are identical. The result is a surface that absorbs light rather than reflects it, giving the piece a presence that reads differently in every setting.
Damaskos is an Athenian atelier whose work is rooted in ancient Greek and Byzantine goldsmithing traditions. Techniques like martillé have been practiced in Greece for millennia; Damaskos keeps them alive through continuous handwork rather than mechanical reproduction. This cross wears equally well as a daily piece or a considered occasion pendant — its scale and finish make it readable without being ornate.
