Damaskos Byzantine 18K Gold Cross with Square Sapphire
A Byzantine cross in 18K gold, finished with a hand-applied martillé surface that creates a velvety, light-diffusing texture. A 3x3mm square sapphire sits at the center, framed by hand-laid granulation. Total sapphire weight: 0.15 ct.
About The Product
This Byzantine cross centers on a 3x3mm square sapphire set within a frame of hand-laid granulation — tiny spheres of gold fused individually to the surface, a technique traced directly to ancient Greek goldsmithing. The overall form follows Byzantine cross proportions, giving the piece a structured, architectural weight on the body.
The surface is worked in a martillé finish — a hand-hammered technique that breaks up reflected light and gives the gold a matte, velvety quality distinct from polished or brushed surfaces. Granulation is applied around the sapphire setting, each bead placed by hand in the Damaskos atelier in Athens. The cross is cast and finished in 18K gold and weighs 7.4 grams. The sapphires total 0.15 carats.
Damaskos has worked from its Athens atelier for decades, producing Byzantine and Archaic jewelry using techniques that have changed little since antiquity. This cross is suited to daily wear — substantial enough to read as a statement piece, restrained enough to layer with other work. It arrives as a pendant and can be worn on a chain of your choosing.
