Damaskos Byzantine 18K Gold Cross with Oval Sapphire
A hand-hammered cross in 18K gold, finished in a martillé technique that gives the surface a distinctive velvety texture. Granulation accents frame a single oval sapphire, 4x3mm, set at center. Made entirely by hand in the Damaskos atelier in Athens.
About The Product
This Byzantine cross is built around a single oval sapphire — 4x3mm, totaling 0.45 carats — set against a ground of hand-hammered 18K gold. The piece is defined by restraint: granulation punctuates the arms of the cross without crowding the stone, and the martillé surface finish absorbs light rather than reflecting it.
The martillé technique is a form of controlled hand-hammering applied directly to the gold surface, creating a fine, velvety texture that distinguishes this cross from polished or machine-finished work. Granulation — the application of minute gold spheres fused without solder — is an ancient goldsmithing method revived and practiced continuously in the Damaskos workshop. The cross weighs 20 grams and is worked in 18K gold throughout. These are not decorative choices; they are structural commitments that determine how the piece ages.
Damaskos has operated as a family atelier in Athens for decades, drawing on techniques documented in Byzantine and pre-Byzantine goldsmithing traditions. This cross wears equally well as a daily piece or a ceremonial one. The combination of matte surface, understated gemstone, and hand-formed geometry makes it a piece that holds its presence without demanding attention.
