Damaskos Byzantine 18K Gold Cross with Ruby – Rosette
An 18K gold cross built on a hand-hammered martillé finish — a technique that gives the surface its characteristic velvety texture. Granulation work frames a single round ruby at the center, set within a hand-formed radial rosette. The cross weighs 20 grams and carries 0.08 ct of diamond accents.
About The Product
This Byzantine cross pendant centers on a round ruby, 2.30mm, seated within a hand-formed radial rosette — referred to in Greek goldsmithing as a rodaka. That detail, small and precise, anchors the entire composition and distinguishes this cross from others in the Damaskos collection that use geometric or foliate motifs.
The surface is finished using the martillé technique: each face of the cross is hand-hammered to produce a fine, velvety texture that catches light without reflecting it sharply. Around the ruby, the gold is worked with granulation — a method in which tiny spheres of gold are fused to the surface without solder, using a heat-and-copper-oxide bonding process that dates to the ancient Greek world. The cross is cast in 18K gold, weighs 20 grams, and is accented with 0.08 ct of diamonds.
Damaskos is an Athenian atelier that has worked in Byzantine and Archaic goldsmithing techniques for decades, training its craftspeople in methods that are no longer taught in commercial jewelry production. This cross is suited to daily wear as a pendant or as a piece passed forward — the weight and construction are built for longevity, not display.
