Damaskos Byzantine Weave 18K Gold Cross
A Byzantine cross in 18K gold, hand-woven with a martillé finish that produces a soft, velvety surface texture. Granulation details — small fused gold spheres used in ancient Greek goldsmithing — accent each arm of the cross. Weighing 4.6 grams, it is shaped entirely by hand in the Damaskos atelier in Athens.
About The Product
The Byzantine Weave Cross is one of the more architecturally complex pieces in the Damaskos cross collection. Each arm is constructed using an interlaced weave pattern drawn from Byzantine goldsmithing traditions, giving the cross a layered, textile-like surface rather than a flat or cast form.
The piece is worked in 18K gold and weighs 4.6 grams — substantial enough to register as a statement pendant while remaining wearable daily. The martillé finish is applied by hand: a small hammer is used across the surface to create a fine, irregular texture that diffuses light and gives the gold a matte, almost velvety quality. Granulation — a technique in which tiny spheres of gold are fused to the surface without solder, using a heat and alloy process known since antiquity — adds dimensional detail at key points along the cross. No casting is used in the final form; the shaping, finishing, and granulation are completed by hand.
Damaskos has operated in Athens for decades, producing work rooted in Archaic, Classical, and Byzantine goldsmithing methods. This cross is designed for daily wear or significant occasions — its weight and construction make it a piece intended to last across generations rather than follow a seasonal cycle. It arrives from the atelier as a finished, ready-to-wear pendant.
