Damaskos Byzantine 18K Gold Stud Earrings with Ruby and Diamonds
Square studs in 18K gold with a martillé finish — a hand-hammered technique that gives the surface a soft, velvety texture. Each earring is set with one 2.50mm ruby and four 1.80mm diamonds, framed by hand-applied granulation. Made in the Damaskos atelier in Athens.
About The Product
These square stud earrings are defined by their geometry and surface contrast. The flat, structured form is rendered in 18K gold and ornamented through two distinct hand techniques — granulation and a martillé finish — that give each surface its depth and character. The combination of ruby and diamond setting is what distinguishes this pair within the Damaskos earring range.
The martillé finish is achieved by hand-hammering the gold surface with a specialized punch, creating a uniform texture that diffuses light rather than reflecting it directly. This produces the velvety, matte-to-satin quality visible across the face of each earring. Granulation — the application of minute gold spheres to the surface without solder — traces back to ancient Greek and Etruscan goldsmithing and is one of the most technically demanding techniques in the Damaskos repertoire. Each earring is set with two 1.80mm round diamonds (four total per pair) and one 2.50mm x 2.50mm ruby per earring. All metalwork is executed in 18K gold.
Damaskos is an Athenian atelier with decades of experience reviving pre-modern Greek goldsmithing techniques. Each piece is produced in small quantities and finished entirely by hand. These earrings wear well as an everyday piece and hold equal presence for formal occasions — the restrained scale and secure stud setting make them practical without reducing their weight or intention.
