Damaskos Byzantine 18K Gold Cross with Sapphire (10.6 g)
An 18K gold cross worked in a hand-hammered martillé finish that produces a soft, velvety texture across the surface. Granulation punctuates each arm of the cross, set with a 2.5 x 2.5 mm square sapphire at center. Shaped entirely by hand in the Damaskos atelier in Athens.
About The Product
This 18K gold cross pendant is defined by its martillé finish — a hand-hammering technique that breaks light across the surface to create a distinctly velvety, non-reflective texture. A square sapphire, measuring 2.5 x 2.5 mm, is set at the center, anchored by fine granulation work that traces the edges of each arm.
Granulation is one of the oldest goldsmithing techniques in the Mediterranean tradition, achieved by fusing tiny spheres of gold onto a surface without the use of solder. The result is a texture that is architectural in precision and entirely tactile in character. The martillé finish requires striking the gold repeatedly by hand with a specialized hammer — no two pieces carry exactly the same pattern. As with all Damaskos pieces, weight may vary slightly, plus or minus 0.2 grams, because each cross is formed individually by hand. Gold purity is 18 karats throughout.
Damaskos is an Athenian atelier with decades of practice in Byzantine and ancient Greek goldsmithing techniques, working with methods that have remained largely unchanged since antiquity. This cross is designed for daily wear — understated enough to sit close to the skin, specific enough to be recognized by those who know the craft. It wears equally well alone or alongside other Damaskos pieces.
