Damaskos Byzantine 18K Gold Cross with Emerald & Diamonds – Twisted Wire
A Byzantine cross in 18K gold with a martillé finish — a hand-hammered technique that gives the surface a soft, velvety texture. Twisted wire and granulation frame a central emerald, accented by sixteen individually set diamonds totaling 0.20 carats. Entirely handcrafted in the Damaskos atelier in Athens.
About The Product
This Byzantine cross pendant is built around an elaborate architecture of twisted wire and granulation — two of the most labor-intensive techniques in the goldsmith’s tradition. Where many cross pendants rely on cast forms, this piece is constructed detail by detail, its surface animated by the contrast between fine wire work and the hand-hammered martillé finish that covers the body of the cross.
The martillé technique is applied by striking the gold repeatedly with a small hammer, creating a surface that diffuses light rather than reflecting it flatly — the result is a warmth and depth that polished gold cannot replicate. The piece weighs 10.6 grams and is made from 18K gold throughout. Stone setting includes one central emerald measuring 2.50 x 2.50 mm, twelve round diamonds at 0.01 carats each, and four diamonds at 0.02 carats each, for a combined diamond weight of 0.20 carats. Each stone is set by hand.
Damaskos is one of Athens’ most respected goldsmithing ateliers, working in the tradition of Byzantine and ancient Greek metalwork. This cross is suited to daily wear as much as to ceremony — the martillé finish is forgiving of wear over time, and the weight gives the piece a presence that reads as substantial without being heavy. An heirloom piece in the clearest sense: made to be worn, kept, and passed on.
