Damaskos Byzantine Engraved 18K Gold Hoop Earrings

These hoop earrings are built around one of the oldest decorative vocabularies in goldsmithing: the archaic Greek design tradition. The silhouette is classic, but the surface tells a more specific story — one of texture, repetition, and hand-placed detail that distinguishes this pair from simpler gold hoops.

The earrings are made from 18K gold and finished with a martillé technique — a method of hand-hammering the metal surface to produce a fine, velvety texture that catches light without the hard reflectivity of polished gold. Against this ground, the maker has applied granulation: tiny spheres of gold fused to the surface without solder, a process requiring precise heat control and a steady hand. Twisted wire runs alongside, tracing the contours of the design. Both granulation and twisted wire are techniques documented in ancient Greek goldwork and remain among the most labor-intensive methods in the Damaskos repertoire.
