Damaskos Byzantine Teardrop 18K Gold Drop Earrings
18K gold drop earrings built on techniques native to ancient Greece. A hand-hammered martillé finish gives the surface a velvety, light-diffusing texture, while gold rope-wire and granulation detail each teardrop form. Shaped entirely by hand in the Damaskos atelier, Athens.
About The Product
These teardrop drop earrings are drawn from the Archaic Greek jewelry tradition — a period defined by precise metalwork rather than ornamentation for its own sake. The defining feature is the teardrop silhouette, framed by hand-laid gold rope-wire and punctuated with granulation: the ancient technique of fusing minute spheres of gold to a surface without visible solder.
The finish is martillé — a hand-hammering method that creates a finely textured, almost velvety surface that diffuses light rather than reflecting it in a single plane. The effect is immediately distinct from polished or machine-finished gold. Each earring weighs approximately 10 grams and is worked in 18K gold throughout. No casting, no molds — the form is built up by hand in the Damaskos workshop in Athens.
Damaskos has produced archaeological-reproduction and original jewelry in Athens for decades, working within the same craft lineage as the ancient goldsmiths whose pieces now reside in museum collections. These earrings move between formal occasions and considered everyday wear — the weight and scale are substantial without being decorative in an obvious way. They are the kind of piece acquired once and kept indefinitely.
