Damaskos Byzantine Paisley 18K Gold Earrings with Sapphires and Rubies
18K gold stud earrings shaped in a Byzantine paisley motif, finished with a hand-hammered martillé surface that gives the gold a distinctive velvety texture. Twisted wire and granulation frame two oval sapphires and two round rubies — techniques drawn directly from ancient Greek goldsmithing, executed entirely by hand in the Damaskos atelier.
About The Product
These stud earrings are built around a paisley form interpreted through the Byzantine tradition — a curved, organic silhouette that recurs throughout the Damaskos archive but is distinguished here by its compact scale and dual-stone setting. The combination of sapphires and rubies within a single pair is uncommon in the collection, giving these earrings a specific visual tension between deep blue and red.
The surface is treated with a martillé finish — a hand-hammering technique that creates a fine, dimpled texture across the gold, softening its reflectivity and producing what jewelers describe as a velvety quality under light. Around the stones, twisted wire and granulation add structural detail: granulation involves fusing tiny spheres of gold to the surface without solder, a method practiced in ancient Greece and Etruria and preserved in only a handful of ateliers today. The earrings are set with two oval sapphires measuring 4x3mm each and two round rubies at 2.30mm each, all in 18-karat gold.
Damaskos is one of the few Greek ateliers working exclusively in ancient and Byzantine goldsmithing techniques — each piece is made by hand in Athens with no industrial casting. These earrings are sized for daily wear but carry the weight of a considered purchase. They pair naturally with other pieces from the Damaskos Byzantine series, including coordinating rings and bracelets.
