The martillé technique involves hand-hammering the gold to create a fine, dimpled texture that scatters light evenly and gives the metal a velvety, matte-satin quality distinct from polished or high-shine gold. Granulation — the application of tiny fused gold spheres — is an ancient technique requiring precise heat control; no solder is used to attach each sphere, making every detail a product of direct hand skill.
